We have telehealth options available for current patients that have been seen in the past 12 months.

Telehealth allows you to connect with one of our doctors from your home by video chat. You can use your smart phone, tablet, or computer to communicate via two-way video chat with your doctor. In some cases we can do phone visits with providers if you do not have internet or a smart phone. Most virtual visits will require surveys to be completed prior to the appointment. These surveys can be completed via our patient portal. If you are not set up with our Patient Portal, please call the office for more information.

Nutrition Works is a collaborative pilot project involving MANNA FoodBank, the YMCA of Western North Carolina, and Mission Health Partners.  The goal of this work is to disrupt the negative impacts of food insecurity on patient health.   When money is tight, each day can mean a series of spending trade-offs that can have both short and long-term effects on health and well-being.  This year the work is beginning with six Mission clinics in Buncombe, Haywood and McDowell counties.  By incorporating simple screening questions into clinic intake forms, practitioners at Mission Health clinics will be able to “diagnose” food insecurity onsite within their practice. Once diagnosed, clients will be directed to the MANNA Food Helpline to find out how to get more food into their home, and connected with the YMCA’s Healthy Living Mobile Kitchen for access to fresh healthy food, cooking demonstrations and nutrition lessons with tangible, take home practices at each clinic location.  This collaborative approach will provide wrap around services to families experiencing food insecurity so that they have the resources and training to lead a healthy active life.  The YMCA, Mission, and MANNA hope that this pilot will set the stage for connecting more clinics across Western North Carolina with food distribution partners providing resources and support to patients in need of healthy food.

The YMCA Mobile kitchen is scheduled to be at Haywood Pediatrics in the Clyde parking lot at the following times:

NC Medicaid (and NC Health Choice) is Changing!

Updated 19 March 2021

As of 20 Feb 2021 Haywood Pediatrics is participating with Medicaid Health Plans AmeriHealth Caritas, Wellcare, EBCI Tribal Option and NC Medicaid Direct. Starting 1 March 2021 patients who have insurance through Medicaid or NC Health Choice will begin to receive letters telling them whether they stay in Medicaid Direct (the current system) or move to the new system of Medicaid and NC Health Choice run by insurance companies called “managed care”.

Patients will be able to choose which plan to participate in between 15 March 2021 and 14 May 2021. Patients who have to move to a Medicaid health plan and don’t chose a plan by 15 May 2021 will be auto enrolled into a health plan by a computer program. We encourage all our patients who will have to move to “managed care” to choose a health plan before 14 May 2021. This new system of paying for healthcare for NC Medicaid and NC Health Choice beneficiaries in NC will start 1 July 2021.

The main Medicaid Transformation website is at https://ncmedicaidplans.gov Please note as of 19 Mar 2021 the provider lookup tool still doesn’t list all the plans Haywood Pediatrics will be participating with- we are aware and are working diligently to get this fixed. We do expect to participate with all the plans, so if there is a plan you really want to pick but it isn’t available yet, our advice is to wait and check every few days to see when it shows up. We will be sending out communication when this is fixed.

A few suggestions when making your selection:

  • PCP’s first and last name’ should be Haywood Pediatrics (not an individual provider). Although if you do pick one of our providers, Haywood Pediatrics will be listed as your PCP.
  • PCP’s address should be 15 Facility Drive, Clyde, NC 28721. This is our main office and will cover both locations.
  • Choose a health plan. Currently AmeriHealth Caritas, WellCare and EBCI Tribal Option are available. Again, we are expecting to participate with all the PHPs and will send out communication when available.
  • Enrollment Call Center – toll free 833-870-5500 – call them! They can help

If I get a letter saying my children stay in Medicaid Direct, do I need to do anything?

No

Anything Else?

If your child is enrolled in free and reduced lunch, make sure you don’t miss out on the P-EBT benefit. The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program helps families purchase food for children whose access to free or reduced-priced meals at school has been impacted by COVID-19 because students are learning virtually, outside of brick-and-mortar schools

Why is this change happening to NC Medicaid and NC Health Choice?

The NC General Assembly passed the first of three Medicaid transformation laws in 2015. Link to Bill Background from https://medicaid.ncdhhs.gov/transformation “In 2015, the NC General Assembly enacted legislation directing DHHS to transition Medicaid and NC Health Choice from fee-for-service to managed care. Under managed care, the state contracts with insurance companies, which are paid a predetermined set rate per enrolled person to provide all services. The Department was on track to go live Feb. 1, 2020; however, new funding and program authority were required from the General Assembly to meet this timeline and Medicaid Managed Care was suspended in November 2019. In July 2020, legislation authorized the restart of Medicaid Managed Care transformation efforts with a July 1, 2021, launch date for Standard Plans and a July 1, 2022, launch date for Behavioral Health I/DD Tailored Plans.“
