Sports Physicals

A sports physical exam (pre-participation physical examination) is a thorough medical examination that determines whether or not it is safe for an athlete to participate in a particular sport. Often sports physicals are required for your children and teens before they are allowed to join a team sport and are usually required yearly. Sports physicals include a detailed medical history that is usually in a form that the parent completes prior to the visit. These examinations are best performed by Haywood Pediatrics, your patient-centered medical home, as we are the patient's primary care provider and we have access to all the patient's medical history and records.
**** A sports physical is considered an annual well-child visit. If forms are needed they can be completed at the visit and throughout a one year time period if documentation of a well-child visit or sports physical is required. ****

At Haywood Pediatrics, we understand the importance of your child's health and well-being, which is why we have referral relationships with experienced teams of doctors dedicated to health problems - from emergency care to treatment of birth defects and chronic or developmental conditions, as well as, behavioral health services.

Complimentary Prenatal Consultation

A prenatal consultation allows expectant parents to meet with a pediatrician in our practice. This visit allows us to develop a relationship and to discuss any potential circumstances that may affect you and your baby. We invite you to bring any questions you may have about our office or your child’s medical care.

Haywood Pediatrics offers free prenatal classes for the families in our community. Topics include infant feeding, milestones, baby basics and much more. Classes are taught by a certified lactation consultant and mommy of three, Kasey Valentine-Steffen. Contact the office for more information.

Circumcision is an optional procedure for newborn males that may be performed for religious or other reasons. This procedure would be performed by one of our board-certified pediatricians on an established patient in the office within 2 weeks of birth. Your doctor will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you before you make your decision. In some cases, insurance, such as Medicaid, does not cover the cost for this optional procedure. If you are interested in your newborn circumcised please speak to front office staff about the current payment policy.

Sick Visits/Acute Care For Illness And Injuries

This is an appointment for sick children. Typically, appointments can be made on the same day.
Although minor illnesses and injuries do not often develop into serious conditions our doctors and nurse practitioners are available to treat conditions such as:

  • Ear infections
  • A sore throat
  • Rashes
  • Pink eye
  • Fever
  • Allergic Reactions
  • Minor Lacerations
  • Minor Burns
  • Removal of Minor Foreign Bodies
  • Suture Removal

Minor Laceration Repairs

Most lacerations or wounds are often short and shallow but may be bleeding and are at risk for infection. The goal of laceration repair is to stop the bleeding. Our doctors have the ability to repair simple lacerations. This can be done by suturing (using stitches), or by Dermabond, a liquid adhesive. The provider decides which upon the method based on the site and nature of the laceration. If our doctors do not believe that is suitable to repair the laceration in our office, your child will be referred to the appropriate specialist or the emergency room. Follow up care may be required to remove sutures and to monitor the healing process. Most lacerations heal well with no complications.

Management Of Chronic Illness In Children

At Haywood Pediatrics, we offer long-term care for patients with chronic illnesses. We strive to provide the most effective treatment options with the least amount of interference in your child's daily life.

Our providers are specially trained in treating chronic conditions such as ADHD, asthma, overweight and obesity. We work together with families to educate them on the most current disease information and encourage them to maintain a healthy home lifestyle. We encourage families' involvement with the treatment of chronic illnesses in order to offer support and understanding for the child.

Developmental Screening

Developmental screening is a routine procedure used to identify potential developmental delays. An early detection is a valuable tool. Developmental screenings identify delays that may indicate autism, intellectual disability, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, among others.
Screenings can be performed through simple questioning as part of a regular check-up to ensure that your child is progressing. This screening can be of major assistance in identifying and then treating early developmental conditions.

Behavioral Consultation

Care of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder / Attention Deficit Disorder
Children with behavior problems often cause worry and concern for parents, who may be unsure of how to treat this situation. A behavioral consultation allows our doctor to assess your child's natural activity and interaction, and to review interviews with you, teachers or other involved adults, in order to assess behavior and develop a treatment plan.

Haywood Pediatrics refers patients for Behavioral Health Services as needed. Consultations can be performed at any age, but most commonly on school-age children. We work together with you and your child to develop an individualized treatment plan with scheduled follow-up visits.

MEDICATION RECHECKS

This type of visit is reserved for children taking certain medications. Rechecks are most often necessary related to medications used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and those for asthma and allergies. These visits are made to ensure that the medication is working properly, monitor for side effects, maintain effective dosing and monitor growth and behavior. These appointments are often scheduled every 3 to 6 months.

Pre-Operative Visits

This visit is for children undergoing a surgical procedure for which the surgeon requires medical clearance. Typically, pre-operative visits are completed 7-10 days before the procedure.

Rechecks/Follow-Up Visits

Rechecks are follow-up visits for a prior diagnosis. Rechecks are most often scheduled for ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, burns, mononucleosis, concussions, and cellulitis. The provider determines the need for rechecks and the recommended scheduling time frame.

Abscess Incision And Drainage (I&D)

An abscess is a localized collection of pus in the tissues of the body, often accompanied by swelling and inflammation and frequently caused by bacteria. They may require drainage in order to heal. For specific sites, our doctors are capable of incising and draining these infections. Depending on the site and size, sometimes it is necessary for these to be drained by a surgeon.

Burn Care

Our offices provide treatments for burns and sunburn. This includes removing the damaged skin as well as providing proper wound dressing and antibiotics as needed.

Complete Blood Count With Differential (CBC)

This is a blood test most often obtained via a finger stick. It is done to evaluate patients for anemia or during sick visits to help providers determine the severity of a child's illness. Results are often available within minutes.

Influenza Culture

During flu season, our staff can perform influenza cultures. This culture is performed by swabbing the nose of the patient. This culture can identify influenza type A and type B. The result can be obtained within 15 minutes.

Nebulizer Therapy

Nebulizer therapy may be provided when a child is having difficulty breathing either due to a respiratory illness or an asthma exacerbation. The nebulizer contains a bronchodilator, such as albuterol, used to open tight airways. Nebulizer treatments may also contain steroid medical to reduce airway inflammation.

Splinting

In the event that your child has an injury, our staff may splint the area to stabilize and immobilize the injury. We do not have the ability to perform X-rays in our office but we do use local radiology groups to rule out fractures.

Throat Culture

Our staff has the ability to perform throat cultures to diagnose strep throat infections. We use rapid strep cultures which can provide a result within 10 minutes. If the rapid test is negative, we perform a 48-hour throat culture to confirm the result of the rapid test. If the 24-48 hour culture is positive, we will notify you and send in a prescription to your pharmacy.

Urinalysis (UA)

We can perform a screening of your child's urine. This test screens for the presence of blood, protein, white blood cells and sugar to rule out a number of health conditions. This test may be done as part of a well-child exam and as part of a sick patient evaluation when necessary.
This screening test does not test for the presence of recreational drugs.

Urine Culture

In the event that a patient's urinalysis indicates a urinary tract infection, a urine culture may be performed in our office. This culture is performed over 24-48 hours and may identify that bacteria is causing the infection. If bacterial sensitivities need to be identified to determine which antibiotics would be best to treat the infection we would then send the culture to an outpatient laboratory.
