Meet Our Providers And Care Team Members

Haywood Pediatrics is a group of Board Certified Pediatricians and Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. We have been providing health care to the children of Western North Carolina for over 40 years.

Our Pediatricians

STEVEN HAMMEL, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Dr. Hammel was raised in the Buffalo, New York area. Dr. Hammel received his undergraduate degree from Canisius College in Buffalo and graduated magna cum laude with his medical degree from the State University of New Yorkat Buffalo School of Medicine. He then completed his internship and residency training in General Pediatrics, at East Carolina University. Dr. Hammel joined Haywood Pediatrics in 1997. He is certified by the North Carolina Medical Board and the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Hammel’s professional interests include all areas of general pediatrics including well-child care and health maintenance. He enjoys watching his patients grow and develop into healthy, well-adjusted young adults.

His personal interests include spending time with his family and being active in the community through church and attending local sporting events.

Karin McLelland, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Dr. McLelland graduated from Whitman College, in Walla Walla, Washington, with a BA in biology. She attended medical school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. She completed her pediatric residency training at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to separating from the Air Force, Dr. McLelland was the Medical Director of Pediatric Services at the 1st Fighter Wing Hospital, Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia. Dr. McLelland joined Haywood Pediatrics in 2003. She is certified by the North Carolina Medical Boardand theAmerican Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. McLelland enjoys all aspects of general pediatrics. In particular, she enjoys working with families of newborns and promoting healthy and active lifestyles across all ages. Additionally, she leads the Quality Improvement Team for the practice.

Dr. McLelland resides in Haywood County with her husband and her teenage twins. She enjoys being outdoors hiking, biking ans attending her children's sporting events. Her husband, John, is a physician at Charles George VA Medical Center.

Sarah Evers, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Dr. Evers grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated cum laude from Emory University with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology. She completed her medical degree at theUniversity of South CarolinaSchool of Medicine, and her residency training in Pediatrics at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. Dr. Evers joined Haywood Pediatrics in 2010. She is certified by the North Carolina Medical Board and the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Evers has a special interest in pediatric asthma and obesity.

Outside of work, Dr. Evers enjoys spending time with her husband, daughters, cats, and dogs as well as hiking, sewing, and baking. She supports community efforts such as Habitat for Humanity and donates her time working with local schools regarding creating healthy eating habits.

Tyler Vereen, M.D., F.A.A.P.

Dr. Vereen was born and raised in the low-country of South Carolina. She attended Clemson University for her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry. She completed her medical degree at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and her residency training in Pediatrics at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital- University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Vereen joined Haywood Pediatrics in 2012. She is certified by the North Carolina Medical Board and is a Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics. She has been certified by the American Board of Pediatrics since 2010. Dr. Vereen has a special interest in the areas of complex medical care/special needs cases, kidney diseases and loves prenatal visits and newborn care/breastfeeding.

She enjoys traveling, reading, spending time with her husband, Will, and visiting with her family in Clemson, SC. She is also a major Clemson Football fan and likes to follow professional soccer.

Mollie Harrington, MAEd, MD, FAAP

Dr. Mollie Harrington is a North Carolina native born in Pinehurst, NC and attended school in the Raleigh-Cary area. She completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Davidson College and then attended Wake Forest University where she completed her Masters in Counseling and then medical school. She completed her Pediatric Residency in 2002 at Brenners Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Harrington is certified by the North Carolina Medical Board, the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Harrington worked with Haywood Pediatrics from 2003-2008. She then took a “break” to be home with her three young daughters, now all teenagers. She also worked for several years in Madison County as a Pediatrician until 2017. She is happy to come back home to Haywood Pediatrics as of September 2018. Her primary interest is in Behavioral/Mental Health supporting children and their families in discovering resources to better improve their lives. Dr. Harrington was the Medical Director for Haywood County Psychological services in 2010. In addition, she enjoys newborn care especially helping with sleep issues in all ages.

Mollie resides in Haywood County with her husband who is also a physician and their three daughters, two dogs, two cats and a pot belly pig. In addition, she is the Guardian for her Down Syndrome brother who is a resident with the ARC of Haywood County. She is an artist on her off days (www.artbymollie.com).

Our Nurse Practitioners

Our Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) use their advanced education in pediatric nursing and health care to promote the health of the children and families in our practice. They treat well and ill children of all ages.

  • Provide well-child examinations
  • Perform developmental screenings
  • Diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses
  • Provide anticipatory guidance regarding common child health concerns
  • Provide childhood immunizations
  • Perform school physicals

Anne Sarzynski, RN, MSN, CPNP, IBCLC

[Anne Sarzynski, RN, MSN, CPNP, IBCLC | Registered Nurse | Canton NC | Clyde] Anne Sarzynski was born in Morristown, New Jersey. She attended the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing.

She is board certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner and by the International Board of Lactation as a Lactation Consultant. She has been with Haywood Pediatrics since 1998.

Mrs. Sarzynski uses her advanced training to help new mothers with breastfeeding. She also has special interests in Juvenile Diabetes, Developmental Pediatrics, and Nutrition. Anne continues to learn Spanish to help with patients coming to our practice who are primarily Spanish speakers.

Mrs. Sarzynski enjoys being outdoors whenever possible, cooking, spending time with family and is an avid reader.

KAREN SHAW, RN, MSN, CPNP

Karen Shaw attended Georgia College and State University to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2006. In 2001 Karen earned her Masters of Science in Nursing, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care from Duke University School of Nursing.

Karen is Board Certified through the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Karen joined our team in November 2016.

Triage Team

When calling into triage you may speak with Hillary, Allie, Alysha, Amanda, Sandra, Erin, Leslie, or Jade. We are proud to have an experienced Triage Team who help ensure you receive appropriate patient care. Our Triage Team answers phone calls, offers advice, makes appointments, provides medication refills, complete school forms, and relay lab results.

IBCLC on staff to offer feeding weight checks, newborn feeding support, breastfeeding and returning to work classes available.
