Stephen J. Wall, M.D., FAAP
Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Stephen J. Wall has over 20 years of practice experience. He is highly skilled in providing young patients with comprehensive care, and has special interests in behavioral problems, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and anxiety disorders. He is also actively involved in the treatment of prevention of child abuse in Haywood County.
Dr. Wall graduated cum laude with his undergraduate degree from Union College, before completing his medical degree at the University of Texas. He then completed residency training in Pediatrics at the University of Texas as well. Dr. Wall joined Haywood Pediatrics in 1989 but he did not own or open the practice in 1989. Haywood Pediatrics was already established.
“I moved here from Houston because we had always loved to camp and hike in the Smokies, and liked the friendliness of the people. I’ve enjoyed raising my family here and feel honored that so many people have trusted me with the care of their children,” said Dr. Wall.
Dr. Wall enjoys theater and music, bicycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway, trout fishing and reading. His wife, Betsy, has taught childbirth classes at Haywood Regional Medical Center for 14 years and is the lactation consultant at the hospital.
Dr. Steven D. Hammel, M.D., FAAP
Dr. Steven Hammel joined Haywood Pediatrics in 1997 and has since been a valuable member of our team, providing our patients and their families with the care they deserve.
Dr. Hammel was raised in the Buffalo, New York area. He received his undergraduate degree from Canisius College in Buffalo in 1990, and graduated magna cum laude with his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine in 1994. He then completed his internship and residency training in General Pediatrics at East Carolina University in 1997.
Dr. Hammel’s professional interests included all areas of general pediatrics, and he enjoys getting to see his patients grow and develop into healthy, well-adjusted young adults. In his eyes, the pediatricians role is to assist the parents in maintaining good overall physical and mental health.
Dr. Hammel’s personal interests include spending time with his family and following professional football (Buffalo Bills) and baseball (Boston Red Sox). He resides in Haywood County with his wife Lori and their three children.
Dr. Karin R. McLelland, M.D., FAAP
Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Karin McLelland joined Haywood Pediatrics in August of 2003, moving to Waynesville after completing her military obligation to the Air Force. Prior to moving, she had been the Medical Director of Pediatric Services at the 1st Fighter Wing Hospital, Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia.
Dr. McLelland completed her pediatric residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas in 1999. She attended medical school at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and started her academic career at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
“Being a general pediatrician is very rewarding for me as I enjoy working with children and their families from birth through teenage years. I particularly enjoy helping families with new babies as well as taking care of children with asthma and other chronic diseases. Hopefully I can help children start off on the right foot and set healthy eating and lifestyle habits for their lifetime.”
In her spare time, Dr. McLelland enjoys spending time with her husband, spending time outdoors hiking and biking, and taking care of their young twins. Her husband, John, is a hospitalist with Asheville Hospitalist Group, and works at Mission Hospital.
Dr. Sarah Evers, M.D.
Dr. Sarah Evers is the newest physician to join Haywood Pediatrics, bringing to the practice a special interest in pediatric asthma and obesity.
Dr. Evers graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology. She then completed her medical degree at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and her residency training in Pediatrics at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Southern Medical Association.
In her spare time, Dr. Evers enjoys spending time with her husband, hiking, painting, cooking and baking.
Dr. Trew Stransky, D.O., FAAP
Dr. Trew Stransky is a board-certified pediatrician with special interests in physical and mental wellness, sports medicine and childhood obesity, providing patients with comprehensive care at Haywood Pediatrics since 2008.
Dr. Stransky completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Michigan, before moving to Arizona to complete his medical training at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduating, Dr. Stransky completed his residency training in Pediatrics at Devos Children’s Hospital at Spectrum Health. Actively involved in the medical community, Dr. Stransky is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North Carolina Medical Society.
Personally, Dr. Stransky is married with 3 children. He enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, hiking and watching college sporting events.

Anne Sarzynski, RN, MSN, PNP
Ann Sarzynski is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner with several years of experience, who has been with Haywood Pediatrics since 1998, providing patients with state-of-the-art care. She is certified by the International Board of Lactation as a Lactation Consultant, and uses her advanced training to help new mothers with breastfeeding.
Anne completed both her undergraduate and graduate degree at the Catholic University of America, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing and certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
Lillian Norris, RN, MSN, PNP
Lillian Norris is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner providing patients with comprehensive care at Haywood Pediatrics since 2009. She specializes in the treatment of asthma and is in the process of gaining certification as an asthma educator, aiming to help children of all ages with asthma and allergies return to optimal health. Lillian also has special interest in holistic treatments.
Lillian completed her nursing education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, receiving Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Primary Care Program.
